We are the world's first explorersĀ and developers of countless technologies that work in harmony with theĀ environment to harness the abundance that nature provides for us. Although our traditions have been challenged and suppressed for generations,Ā many of us never stopped exploring and connecting with nature. Whether it be a cookout or a camping trip, your desire toĀ ventureĀ outdoors and make yourself at home is completely natural and in line with how our people have lived for millenniums.
It's noĀ coincidence that right now, in the midst of a global pandemic and on the heels of mass protests for Black lives, there is a growing number of our people who are letting go of the "dream"Ā andĀ divesting from the status quo to mark our own path towards living well. AsĀ our people continue to call out and mobilize againstĀ injustices, more and more we are recognizing the power of centering ourselves and prioritizing what we are for. We are reclaiming our connection with nature and tapping into indigenous wisdom and ancestral skills as a reservior of power and a roadmap to self-determination.
Ā
BlackGround
Thereās a growing movement of Black people reclaiming our relationship to nature and asserting our right to travel and make ourselves at home wherever we choose to roam in these lands. We (yes, you too!) are the pioneers of a rising BlackGround movement.
Black Nomads
Nomads & Vehicle Lifers
From vans and trucks to RVs and school buses, from "weekend warriors" to full-time nomads, we're asserting our independence, reclaiming our time, and reconnecting with nature by spending time outside and off the beaten path.
Black Campers and Adventurers
Campers
We pull up or walk through and pitch a tent...and then the fun begins. Whether it's kicking back by the fire or heading to the nearest lake for fishing and kayaking, we're hitting up nature to rest, regroup, reset, and reconnect with what really matters.
Adventurers
Adventurers
We're out here speeding downhill on our mountain bikes, dodging trees and stumps along the way. We're out here, turning waterfalls into water slides. The woods and plains are our playground!
Black Hikers and Foragers
For some, it's the pursuit of hidden waterfalls and scenic outlooks. For others, it's the thrill of hunting for this season's choice edible plants and mushrooms. For all walkers of the woods, it's the peace, quiet, and serenity. Basking in the abundance of nature.
Hikers & Foragers
Black Farmers
Farmers & Homesteaders
Feet to the ground, elbow deep in nutrient-dense soil. That's how we do. We're growing our own food and medicine, collecting our own water, giving back to our community, and DIY-ing whatever it takes for us to nourish the land that nourishes us.
Black Survivalists
Healers & Survivalists
From building a shelter to making healing oils and tinctures, we're practicing ancestral living and survival skills and keeping indigenous technology alive. We're staying aware and prepared to struggle victoriously, heal holistically, and live well.
Railroad Slide
Where there are people, there is power.
That power is amplified in spaces that affirm us!
We got you covered. We're building an "above-ground" railroad of safe, inclusive, and affirming outdoor spaces for Black folks!

ImagineĀ getting prepared for your annual family summer camping trip. You log into WayOutdoors.org and notice there's yet another camping destination listed only 30 miles away from you! What you don't even know is this Black-owned farm also has the best homegrown, slow-cooked greens you ever tasted!
ImagineĀ traveling cross-country and only pulling up to places where you can rest assured you'll be greeted with friendly faces and warm handshakes, daps, and hugs. Your one-night layovers suddenly turn into so much more.
ImagineĀ being on a long road trip and feeling your eyes getting heavy...with 3 hours to go! The plan was to just pass right through rural Tennessee, but um...you ain't gonna make it. No worries. You pull out your phone and locate a safe rest stop on a nearby homestead. Never thought about homesteading....hmmmm.

We know, right?!!!
Just what we've all been looking for.Ā Well, you don't have to imagine...
